Life Checks – Online help tool
Client: Led by the Department of Health in-conjunction with Treasury, Dept of Education, Skills, Small and Family Business, Dept of Social Services, Dept of Human Services, Dept of Education and Training and ASIC (Australian Securities and Investment Commission)
Role: Lead UX Designer
Project Overview
The Australian government aimed to drive behavioural change by helping users understand how their lifestyle choices can positively influence their future. The goal was to create a tool that offers a holistic view of users’ lives across four key areas: health, finance, social connectedness, and work.
As the Lead UX Designer, I was responsible for designing the user interface (UI), defining the visual design, and shaping the interactions of the tool. I worked closely as part of a multi-disciplinary team, collaborating with stakeholders, developers, and service and content designers to ensure the tool was intuitive, user-friendly, and aligned with the project’s goals.
Key Contributions
Design and Development
We developed a simple and engaging online questionnaire that users could complete in about ten minutes. The questions focused on behaviours and preferences across the 4 keys areas.
Inclusivity:
The tool was designed to be inclusive and intuitive through the use of icons and imagery to accommodate a broad audience, including those with varying digital literacy and english levels.
UI and Visual Design:
I established the design patterns, UI components, and interactions to ensure a seamless user experience as well as the visual design across the website and quiz.
Research and Testing
Discovery Interviews:
I conducted extensive in-depth discovery interviews to understand user needs and behaviours.
I continually tested the design with users throughout the project lifecycle, documenting and synthesising feedback to refine the tool. Extensively testing score designs, iconography, tone of voice and various interactive features.
Prototyping
I developed the tool from a low-fidelity paper prototype through to high-fidelity designs, then through to a fully operational, interactive prototype.
Project Artefacts
Created various project artefacts including personas, empathy maps, and user needs matrices to support the design process and ensure alignment with user needs.
Impact
User Engagement: Within six weeks of launch, the tool achieved 130,000 site visits and over 50,000 completions.
Actionable Outcomes: More than 25% of users who completed the quiz proceeded to the recommended resource links, and over 25% sent themselves their results via email.
Project Closure
The site was decommissioned in July 2023. View the interactive prototype I developed.
